Right Ventricle Outflow

Description

With the probe position in the parasternal long axis plane, angle the probe away from the felt shoulder (thereby moving the beam towards the left shoulder) to view the right ventricular outflow tract and the pulmonary artery. Colour Doppler interrogation of the PA is necessary in this view (see the pulsed wave Doppler image for more detail).

The pulmonary artery Doppler is best appreciated from this view as the cursor will be almost parallel to the flow of blood. Note the laminar nature of the flow which is represented by an envelope with a relatively clear centre. The flow is negative as blood is travelling away from the probe. PA flow velocity is usually under 1m/s.
